Fire contained in Erbil’s Langa market
ERBIL — The fire that erupted in the historic Langa market in Erbil was successfully contained on Tuesday evening, with no fatalities reported. The blaze, which broke out around 7:30 PM, caused extensive damage to the market area. However, efforts by the Erbil Civil Defense teams ensured the fire was brought under control after an intensive operation.
Karwan Mirawdely, the spokesperson for Erbil Civil Defense, confirmed to 964media that the fire was contained following a significant response effort. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but there is speculation that an electrical short circuit might have been the trigger, exacerbated by strong winds present at the time.
Sources from the civil defense team informed 964media that all available units and vehicles were deployed from their bases in Erbil to manage the situation. 964media reporters were on the ground, providing timely updates, images, and videos of the fire and the response activities.
The emergency response teams told 964media that between 25 to 30 individuals were transported to hospitals due to smoke inhalation and respiratory issues. Omed Khoshnaw, the Governor of Erbil, confirmed that over 20 citizens received medical attention following the incident.
Governor Khoshnaw also announced the formation of a committee comprising security forces, police, and firefighters to investigate the fire. He assured that civil defense and municipal teams would remain at the site to initiate cleanup and repair operations in the affected areas. Preliminary reports indicate that more than 50 shops were damaged in the fire, with further assessments ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage.
