Deal includes postal services

Iraq and Syria sign deal to enhance telecommunication and cybersecurity cooperation

BAGHDAD — Iraq and Syria have signed a deal to strengthen bilateral relations and improve telecommunication infrastructure in both countries, officials announced Wednesday.

The memorandum of understanding, signed by Iraqi Communications Minister Hiyam Al-Yasiri and her Syrian counterpart Mohammad Samer Khalil, aims to lay down an international optical cable across the shared border and foster collaboration on cybersecurity efforts.

Endorsed by both prime ministers and facilitated by a joint Iraqi-Syrian committee, the agreement outlines cooperation in telecommunications, information technology, and postal services. It further calls for joint efforts to enhance international connectivity, interconnection services, and postal exchange between the two nations.

A key aspect of the agreement is the implementation of an international optical cable pathway, enabling smoother telephone traffic exchange, digital content management, and collaborative cybersecurity measures. Both parties have reportedly agreed to establish joint technical committees to oversee execution and develop specific implementation programs.

Minister Al-Yasiri welcomed the agreement, highlighting its potential to improve telecommunications and information technology services for citizens in both countries.
