Tribal leaders in Wasit agree to reduce mourning periods to one day

WASIT – Tribal leaders and notables from the regions of Badra, Jassan, and Zarbatia agreed on Monday to reduce the days of mourning to a single day and to eliminate the cooking segment, aiming to lessen the burden on the families of the deceased. This move is similar to actions taken in many areas across Iraq, encouraged by local leaders and some religious authorities.

Sheikh Adnan Al-Lami, the initiator of the movement told 964media that the gathering included numerous leaders and notables from Badra, Jassan, and Zarbatia, of Wasit Governorates with the purpose of organizing condolence meetings and easing the burden on the bereaved families.

The attendees agreed on several points, the cancellation of preparing meals, not accompanying the busial procession (with those choosing to go doing so at their own choice and not being the responsibility of the deceased’s family), and setting the condolence meeting times from 8 to 11 in the morning and from 2 to 5 in the afternoon, for one day only. It was also agreed that the owner of the funeral should announce these times on the obituary banner.

Ahmed Al-Jourani, one of the attendees, told 964media that there was an agreement have the Quran House in Badra hold a similar meeting for women to see if they agree or not, as they are more involved in cooking and other preparations for the funeral procession.

Traditions is that the mourning days are three days and food meals on the family of the dead person.
