Basra allocates land for cancer treatment center

BASRA — The Directorate of Al-Huwayr, located north of Basra, confirmed on Monday the allocation of land for the construction of a cancer treatment center in the northern part of the province. The project will be financed by Russian oil titan Lukoil and the Basra Oil Company.

Abdullah Salman, the director of the Al-Huwayr district, told 964media, “Following Lukoil’s 30 million dollar donation for the establishment of a cancer treatment center, which operates in the West Qurna 2 oil field, a team comprising the district directorate, the municipality, and representatives from both Basra Oil Company and Lukoil was formed to allocate land for the project.”

Three potential sites in the Al-Huwayr area were evaluated before a location in the Al-Sura area, north of the district, was chosen. This site spans approximately 2.5 acres, with the potential for future expansion.

“Lukoil will contribute 30 million dollars as a donation to the government center, which will have 100 beds, while Basra Oil Company will fund the remaining 70 million dollars of the project cost,” Salman further stated.
