Baghdad council member questions exclusion of women from governor positions
BAGHDAD – A member of the Baghdad provincial council directed a question to the country’s leaders on Tuesday, inquiring about the lack of women elected as governors as councils across the country elect provincial leaders this week.
In a post to X (formerly Twitter), Ola Al-Tamimi questioned whether councils’ decisions were a result of male-dominated politics, or perceptions about women’s abilities to hold public office.
Al-Tamimi’s post stated:
The question is directed to the leaders of the country: How long will the marginalization of women and the deprivation of their rights continue? Haven’t women achieved a lot and gained the highest votes? Why does masculinity persist in the political process? Are women not capable of holding high positions, and is it intended for them to only have secondary political roles? When will we see a woman governor, council president, or even prime minister?
