KDP delegation meets Coordination Framework to discuss government formation

BAGHDAD — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and a Kurdistan Democratic Party delegation met the Coordination Framework’s government formation committee in Baghdad on Monday, discussing cabinet formation, political stability and the regional situation.

The meeting was held at the office of State of Law Coalition head Nouri al-Maliki. The framework said the KDP delegation presented proposals and visions aimed at contributing to the government program, with both sides stressing the importance of reaching understandings to form a government capable of addressing current challenges.

The Kurdistan Region Presidency said discussions also covered “the repercussions of the war and the regional situation and its impacts on Iraq,” stressing the need to keep the country away from escalation and regional tensions.

The talks are part of ongoing negotiations between Baghdad and Erbil ahead of cabinet formation. Key outstanding issues between the two sides, including the federal budget, oil exports and the region’s authorities, are typically revisited during government formation negotiations.

Zaidi was nominated last week by the Coordination Framework following the withdrawal of both Maliki and incumbent Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. He has 30 days to form a cabinet, draft a government program and secure approval from an absolute majority of parliament’s 329 members.
