Diyala police seize truck carrying smuggled alcohol near checkpoint
DIYALA — Diyala police intercepted a large truck carrying smuggled alcoholic beverages concealed behind an iron barrier at the Sarha checkpoint, the force said Sunday, describing the hiding method as professionally prepared to make the vehicle appear empty.
“Precise inspection and the high security awareness of Diyala police personnel made them a thorn in the eyes of those trying to tamper with the security and economy of the country,” the statement said.
Iraq has imposed a nationwide ban on the import, production and sale of alcohol, with enforcement tightening since 2023. The restrictions do not apply in the Kurdistan Region. Authorities have reported repeated interceptions of shipments concealed in vehicles as black market activity has grown following the ban.
