Drone attack hits base near Baghdad airport with explosions heard across capital

BAGHDAD — Residents across Baghdad heard six powerful explosions late Sunday as drones struck a logistics facility near Baghdad International Airport, a security source told 964media.

The attack targeted the Logistics Support Area — also known as Camp Victory or the Victory Base Complex — a military installation near the airport. Security forces moved quickly to the area following the blasts, which were heard across several neighborhoods of the capital.

Within an hour, security forces located a vehicle believed to have been used to launch the attack in the outskirts of Radwaniyah district, southwest of Baghdad. The launcher had been concealed inside a Kia cargo pickup truck modified to carry rocket platforms with multiple launch rails. No casualties or damage figures have been released.

The attack is the latest in a series of strikes on military and diplomatic targets in the capital since the regional war between the United States, Israel and Iran began Feb. 28. Early Saturday, the U.S. Embassy inside Baghdad’s Green Zone was struck.

In Erbil, a drone strike hit the UAE Consulate General earlier this week, wounding two security guards and damaging the building. Iraqi authorities have repeatedly pledged to protect diplomatic missions — the Foreign Ministry, national security adviser and prime minister have all vowed in recent days to pursue those responsible for attacks on diplomatic compounds. The strikes have continued regardless.
