PMF chair stresses respect for diplomatic norms after Fidan remarks

BAGHDAD — Popular Mobilization Forces Chair Faleh al-Fayyadh stressed the importance of maintaining bilateral relations and respecting diplomatic norms during a meeting with Turkish Ambassador Anil Bora Inan, according to a statement from his office.

The statement said “ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and raise the level of security coordination were discussed in a manner that preserves the security of the two countries and contributes to the stability of the region.”

Al-Fayyadh stressed the need for “respect for diplomatic norms, especially after the recent statements issued by the Turkish foreign minister,” emphasizing “his rejection of any foreign interference in Iraqi affairs.”

The meeting follows remarks by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in a CNN Turk interview hinting at possible military operations in Sinjar and Makhmour to end the PKK’s presence in Iraqi territory.

“After finishing the Syrian side regarding the SDF and the PKK, there is also the Iraqi side, which must make a wiser decision,” Fidan said.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Turkish ambassador last week to convey reservations and reaffirm its rejection of interference in internal affairs. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said Fidan’s remarks were misinterpreted.
