Second construction worker killed in Sulaymaniyah in single day

SULAYMANIYAH — A worker was electrocuted and killed Thursday afternoon while repairing an electrical panel at a restaurant in Sulaymaniyah, marking the city’s second fatal workplace incident in a single day.

Osman Zindani, head of the Construction Workers’ Union in Sulaymaniyah, told 964media the victim was not wearing protective gloves at the time of the accident. “The incident happened this afternoon at one of the city’s restaurants,” he said.

The victim, from Baqubah, was taken to the Forensic Medicine Department in Sulaymaniyah, Zindani said.

Earlier in the day, a separate workplace accident occurred when part of a building collapsed in the Raparin neighborhood, killing one worker and seriously injuring five others. That incident took place near the Unit 70 base of the Peshmerga forces.

According to the Sulaymaniyah branch of the Construction Workers’ Union, 18 laborers have died while on the job so far this year in the governorate. Union officials cite poor enforcement of safety regulations and a lack of protective equipment as key contributing factors.
