Intelligence forces capture ISIS member in Hor Rajab

BAGHDAD – Iraqi intelligence forces have captured an Islamic State operative, described as a “dangerous terrorist”, in the Hor Rajab area, Baghdad, according to a statement released by the General Directorate of Intelligence and Security on Monday.

“Through precise intelligence information, the Baghdad Intelligence and Security Directorate carried out a well-planned ambush, resulting in the arrest of a dangerous terrorist who held multiple positions within ISIS in Hit,” the statement said.

The arrest was made under a judicial warrant issued in accordance with Article 4 of Iraq’s Anti-Terrorism Law.

Although ISIS lost its territorial control in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, the group continues to threaten regional stability. Employing strategies such as ambushes and targeted attacks, ISIS remains active in areas in the country.

In response, Iraq has intensified its efforts against the group, eliminating more than 100 militants, including high-ranking leaders, in 2024. In October, Prime Minister Al-Sudani announced the killing of ISIS’s leader in Iraq and eight senior members during a targeted operation.
