Workers in Garmiyan receive unpaid wages after legal action
GARMIYAN, SULAYMANIYAH — Workers from a cleaning company in Garmiyan, Sulaymaniyah, finally received their December wages today after a prolonged delay. The company had employed 45 workers last year under a contract to clean Garmiyan University and its student dormitories.
The total amount paid was 13.5 million IQD ($10,300), with each worker receiving 300,000 IQD ($229).
Adnan Mohammed, head of the Garmiyan branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Syndicate, told 964media, “The company had a contract with these workers that ended at the beginning of this year. Due to issues with not receiving funds from the bank, they hadn’t paid the workers.”
Mohammed criticized the company’s rationale, stating, “The company’s excuse is not acceptable because they had a legal and contractual obligation to pay the workers.”
The workers, who had filed complaints with the syndicate, saw their case taken to court by the syndicate’s two dedicated lawyers. “The court’s decision led to the arrest of the company’s owner and the recovery of the workers’ wages,” Mohammed explained.
The workers expressed satisfaction with the resolution after a seven-month wait. “Thanks to God, I am very happy to have received it today, which the company had withheld from us. It is our right,” said Hama Amin Hussein, one of the workers, in an interview with 964media.
