Promotion of Kurdish language a main focus

KRG tourism board releases strategic plan and key priorities for 2024

ERBIL, January 18 — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Tourism Board has unveiled its plans for 2024, emphasizing key priorities including the promotion of the Kurdish language, local employment initiatives, and curated tourism packages.

Tourism directors from Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, Halabja, Soran, Garmiyan, Zakho, and Raparin met to discuss implementation guidelines and recommendations for the board’s strategy.

Ibrahim Abdul Majid, Director of Media and Communications for the board, revealed to 964media that a focal point in the 2024 plan involves mandating use of the Kurdish language on signs, menus, and publications at tourist attractions.

Additionally, a minimum hiring requirement mandates that 75 percent of employees and workers at tourist destinations should be locals, highlighting the need to empower the local workforce.

Majid emphasized the development of tourism packages for companies bringing visitors to the Kurdistan Region.

He stressed the importance of not limiting tourists solely to attractions but also incorporating archaeological and historical sites in the curated packages to provide a more enriching experience.
