KRG plans low-income housing allocations for needy families

ERBIL, January 16 — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) plans to allocate housing units to eligible low-income families, the head of the Ministry of Construction and Housing said on Sunday.

Minister Dana Abdelkarim said allocations would be done in line with established housing regulations.

Applications for low-income housing have been open online since August 2023. After two prior extensions, a final deadline has been set for the end of January 2024.

Of a total 9,004 units set aside for families in need, some have been completed, while a number of units are still under construction. Officials estimate they need 300 billion Iraqi dinars to finish construction, however, according to the ministry, those funds have not been provided by the government.

Demand for low-income housing is high in the region, with the ministry reporting that over 65,000 families have submitted forms. Units will be distributed to poor and low-income families with 25-year installment plans and no down-payment requirement.
