Zakho Hospitals Treat Over a Quarter-Million Patients in 2023, Reports Health Directorate

ZAKHO, January 1–Zakho’s health sector witnessed significant activity in 2023, as reported by Amir Ali Amin, the spokesperson for the Zakho Health Directorate. The year saw a substantial number of patients seeking medical assistance, with hospitals in Zakho catering to 255,493 individuals. Of these, 19,544 were admitted for various treatments.

The year also marked a significant number of births, with hospitals in Zakho recording 6,100 newborns. Zakho’s hospitals also dealt with a notable number of fatalities. The total deaths recorded stood at 464, with heart disease being the leading cause, accounting for 116 fatalities. Additionally, 82 deaths resulted from a variety of other ailments, indicating the range of health challenges faced by the region.

Surgical procedures were a significant part of the healthcare services provided, with 11,491 patients undergoing operations in Zakho’s hospitals.

However, the year also saw strict enforcement of health guidelines, leading to the closure of 70 health establishments, either temporarily or permanently. These closures were due to non-compliance with health and safety regulations.
