Mask ban implemented in Kirkuk for public safety

KIRKUK, December 30 — Kirkuk police have instituted a ban on facial coverings of all types, including masks, in public spaces across the city with authorities promising strict enforcement and legal consequences for violators.

Police Director Kawa Gharib said the primary objective behind the decision is to safeguard the city. Gharib clarified that individuals found with face coverings will face prosecution.

The measure follows a recent incident near the city’s second-hand market, where a masked gunman opened fire on two police officers, resulting in the death of one of the men and severe injuries to the other. Additionally, a civilian shopper was also harmed during the incident.
