Current building is 60 years old
Calls for new library building in Akre to preserve collection of 25,000 books
AKRE, December 25 — Activists and intellectuals in Duhok’s Akre district are advocating for the construction of a new building to house the local library, which was originally built in 1963 and currently accommodates approximately 25,000 books, many of which are deemed old, but of historical significance.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the existing structure, activists and intellectuals in Akre are urging the government to undertake the construction of a new facility for the city’s library. They argue that the current building is in poor condition, leading to the deterioration of most books due to inadequate storage space.
Abdulqahar Ahmad, the library’s director, informed 964 that plans for a new building are in place for the upcoming year. Highlighting a commitment to preserving the existing collection of books, Ahmad said an annual collection process was underway to categorize books based on various categories and languages.
