Volunteers launch ‘Zero Waste’ campaign in Al-Noor, Najaf

NAJAF, December 24 — Volunteers in Najaf launched a “Zero Waste” campaign to clean and cultivate public spaces in the Al-Noor district, west of the province, within one week, with the help of municipality vehicles.

Al-Noor district is located in the southernmost part of Najaf, with around 8,000 families totaling 20,000 people. It lacks green spaces and cleaning workers.

Namarq Jawad, a volunteer, told 964media that the campaign aims to improve the situation in the Al-Noor district, “an overlooked area far from the city center that humanitarian organizations and volunteer teams do not reach”. he added: “We seek to protect the environment, increase green spaces, and raise awareness among citizens about the dangers of climate change and the importance of cleanliness”.

The campaign includes several phases, including planting 400 seedlings, conducting workshops and awareness lectures in elementary schools and kindergartens, empowering citizens to classify types of waste, and recycling them in the future.

Local residents are also involved in the campaign to enhance responsibility and train the new generation to preserve green spaces and protect the environment.

The initiative was funded by the Iraqi Al-Amal Association in collaboration with the Najaf Municipality and a group of volunteers. Najaf Governor Majid Al-Waeli pledged to continue the campaign after its completion.

Mohammed Obeid, an engineer at the Najaf Municipality, told 964media: “Legally, we cannot operate in the Al-Noor district, as it is affiliated with the ‘Outskirts of Najaf’ and not the main Najaf Municipality. It is almost devoid of cleaning workers and machinery. We participated with individuals and vehicles from the Najaf Municipality to focus on the district, which is part of the municipality’s plan to participate in volunteer work in the province.”
