Al-Maliki’s State of Law Coalition confronts electoral challenges in Baghdad and Basra
BAGHDAD, December 20 — Preliminary results disclosed by the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) showed the State of Law Coalition, led by former Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, amassed half a million votes in the Iraqi provincial council elections on Monday.
However, Coalition candidates saw a notable decline in their once-dominant strongholds of Baghdad and Basra. The outcomes underscored electoral hurdles confronted by the Coalition, particularly in Baghdad, where it encountered robust competition from Mohammed Al-Halbousi. In Basra, incumbent governor Asaad Al-Eidani’s party emerged triumphant.
The State of Law Coalition’s results are listed below:
Muthanna: first, with 46,750 votes
Maysan: second, with 31,841 votes
Babil: second, with 61, 548 votes
Karbala: second, with 31,656 votes
Diwaniyah: second, with 43,842 votes
Najaf: second, with 35,958 votes
Wasit: second, with 31,321 votes
Dhi Qar: second, with 56,816 votes
Baghdad: third, with 130,468 votes
Basra: third, with 60,534 votes
