Staged kidnapping in Babil unravels as debt-evasion scheme, police say
HILLA — Babil Police Command said an alleged kidnapping reported in the Al-Muwailha area north of the governorate was a fabricated incident staged by the complainant and the purported victim to evade accumulated financial debts.
Police mobilized late at night after receiving an urgent report of a kidnapping. Officers arriving at the scene found a pickup truck belonging to the complainant with bullet damage to its windshield, creating the appearance of an organized abduction. Investigators from the North Babil Anti-Crime Division and forensic specialists collected evidence while reviewing surveillance footage from police cameras and privately owned cameras in the area.
As forensic and digital evidence accumulated, investigators began to question the account provided. The complainant confessed that no kidnapping had taken place, admitting he had fired at his own vehicle’s windshield to convince authorities an abduction had occurred. The following morning, the man reported as kidnapped surrendered to authorities and admitted the incident had been staged to conceal personal debts.
Both men were detained under Article 243 of the Iraqi Penal Code on charges of filing a false report, misleading authorities and diverting security resources to investigate a crime that never occurred.
Similar incidents have been reported in Iraq in recent years. In April 2025, Samarra police denied reports of a kidnapping and said two suspects had used the name of Saraya al-Salam in a fraud and extortion scheme. In September 2024, authorities in Nineveh said a father was involved in the reported disappearance of his son after investigators found the child tied up in an abandoned building and linked the case to financial problems. In January 2024, security forces in Sulaymaniyah located two young men from Dhi Qar who had been reported missing and feared kidnapped, later determining they had intentionally fled after taking money from their family.
