Students in school uniforms appear in a street video circulated on social media, which prompted disciplinary action by Basra education authorities.
Basra students expelled after video depicts them allegedly mocking religious figures
BASRA — The Basra General Directorate of Education announced Wednesday it has expelled a group of students from Al-Safir Private Secondary School after a video circulated on social media appearing to show them throwing books and making offensive remarks about religious figures.
The directorate said it ordered an urgent investigation after identifying the content, and that a specialized committee’s findings led to several disciplinary measures. The students were expelled for the current academic year, had 15 points deducted from their behavior grades and were transferred to other schools.
“The educational institution will not tolerate any behavior that affects the religious or moral values of Iraqi society,” the directorate said, describing the measures as a deterrent. It called on school administrations and parents to strengthen oversight of students’ behavior on social media.
