Iraqi and Kurdish leaders mark Workers’ Day with pledges to protect labor rights

BAGHDAD — Iraqi and Kurdistan Region leaders on Friday issued messages marking International Workers’ Day, praising workers’ contributions and renewing commitments to improve conditions and protect rights.

President Nizar Amedi said workers “continue with their determination and sincerity the path of construction and giving,” affirming “full support for everything that would ensure fairness for them, protect their legitimate rights, improve their working conditions, and provide a safe and dignified environment.”

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said the outgoing government “has been keen to support workers for their pivotal role,” adding that it worked to “consolidate the value of work and activate the path of development and construction.”

Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi said in a post on X that he affirms “commitment to protecting workers’ rights and providing a decent working environment that ensures dignity and stability.”

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani called for “full adherence to labor law and the provision of a safe and fair working environment,” and honored the memory of workers who lost their lives on the job, urging relevant authorities to support their families.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani reaffirmed the KRG’s commitment to “promoting and protecting workers’ rights and improving their livelihoods,” pledging to “protect them from any injustice and mistreatment.”

Last year, hundreds of workers, activists and union members marched in Baghdad from Firdos Square to Tahrir Square, raising demands including implementation of the civil service law, a fair salary scale and social and health protections.
