Maliki meets Zaidi, backs efforts to form government ‘representing all Iraqis’

BAGHDAD — State of Law Coalition leader Nouri al-Maliki met Wednesday with Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi to discuss government formation, expressing support for “his efforts to form a government that represents all Iraqis, works to achieve the public interest, and enhances security and stability in the country.”

The meeting addressed the overall situation in Iraq and the region, with both sides emphasizing the importance of “unifying efforts among national forces and working in a spirit of cooperation and partnership,” according to a statement from Maliki’s media office.

The meeting is the latest in a series of consultations since al-Zaidi’s nomination Monday by the Coordination Framework, which ended months of deadlock following the November 2025 parliamentary elections. Outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met al-Zaidi on Tuesday, pledging support for a peaceful transfer of power. Kurdish leaders have also welcomed the nomination, with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani expressing hope for “a comprehensive national government that meets the aspirations of our people across Iraq.”

Political blocs have begun negotiating cabinet shares. Firas al-Musallamawi, spokesperson for the Reconstruction and Development bloc, said his group expects at minimum four or five ministries. Al-Zaidi has 30 days to form a cabinet and secure parliamentary approval.
