Sudani meets al-Zaidi, pledges peaceful transfer of power

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met Tuesday with Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi to discuss political developments and the process of forming a new government.

Sudani affirmed his support for al-Zaidi’s mandate, saying he was committed to “supporting Mr. al-Zaidi in fulfilling his mandate to form the new government and to reinforce the principle of the peaceful transfer of power in accordance with constitutional and democratic mechanisms.” He said the current phase requires “intensified efforts by all parties to overcome challenges, advance the public interest, and consolidate stability across Iraq.”

Both sides emphasized the need to strengthen unity among national parties and work “in a spirit of responsibility and partnership,” with the statement saying the new government should be “defined by competence and the ability to address crises and challenges.”

The Coordination Framework nominated al-Zaidi Monday evening, ending a deadlock that had persisted since the November 2025 parliamentary elections. A businessman, lawyer and owner of Dijlah TV, he was described by political figures as a “compromise candidate” after his name had not featured prominently in earlier discussions.
