After embassy attacks

Baghdad Operations Command says security reinforced around diplomatic missions

BAGHDAD — Baghdad Operations Command said Wednesday it has stepped up protection measures for diplomatic missions and embassies in the capital, following a wave of attacks on foreign compounds including Tuesday’s renewed drone strike on the U.S. Embassy.

“The situation in Baghdad is stable and secure, and we have taken several measures to ensure protection for all diplomatic missions and embassies,” Operations Command head Walid Khalifa said at a press conference, adding that units have been deployed and security procedures strengthened at multiple levels.

The assurances follow a pattern that has become familiar since the regional war began Feb. 28. Attacks on diplomatic compounds have intensified since the start of the Iran conflict. The U.S. Embassy has been struck multiple times. The Al-Rasheed Hotel, housing the Saudi embassy and the EU Advisory Mission, was hit Monday night. The UAE Consulate General in Erbil has been targeted twice in a week. Each attack has drawn condemnations and pledges from Iraqi authorities — from the Foreign Ministry, the Supreme Judicial Council, the prime minister and now the Operations Command — to pursue those responsible and guarantee the safety of diplomatic missions. The strikes have continued regardless.
