Turkish foreign minister calls Masrour Barzani to discuss regional situation

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani received a phone call from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Wednesday to discuss the regional situation amid the ongoing war between the United States, Israel and Iran.

The two sides discussed “the general situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and the latest developments of the war and tensions in the region,” and agreed on “the importance of preserving peace, stability and security in the region,” according to a KRG statement.

The United States and Israel launched a joint military campaign against Iran on Feb. 28, targeting military infrastructure and leadership facilities. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the initial strikes. Iran has since launched waves of missile and drone attacks on U.S. and allied bases, diplomatic missions and military infrastructure across the Middle East.

It comes as an Iranian missile is shot down within Turkish territory by NATO forces.
