Rockets and launch platform seized in Abu Ghraib, authorities say

BAGHDAD — Iraqi security forces seized nine rockets and a launch platform prepared for use in the Abu Ghraib area, Baghdad, the Iraq’s Security Media Cell said Tuesday.

In a statement, the cell said authorities “seized a platform prepared to launch nine rockets in the Abu Ghraib area to target vital facilities in Baghdad.”

No further details were provided on the intended targets or whether any suspects were arrested.

Since the escalation of the U.S.–Israel war on Iran that began with coordinated strikes on Iranian territory on Feb. 28, the conflict has expanded across the Middle East. Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against U.S. and allied positions, and various Iran-aligned Iraqi militias — including groups under umbrellas such as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq and Saraya Awliya al-Dam — have claimed responsibility for drone and aerial attacks inside Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdistan Region capital city of Erbil alone was targeted by more than 70 missiles and drones, many of which were intercepted by air defense systems before causing significant damage. Prominent targets included the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil and Erbil International Airport, where U.S. and coalition forces are based.
