Sudani urges deescalation in talks with Kuwait, Bahrain

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani held separate phone calls Monday with the Crown Prince of Kuwait and the King of Bahrain to discuss ongoing military operations between United States, Israel an Iran and their impact on regional security, according to statements from his media office.

In a call with Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, the two leaders addressed “the latest security developments in the region and the serious repercussions resulting from the continuation of military operations,” the prime minister’s office said.

Both sides emphasized “the importance of joint Arab coordination and working toward deescalation and resorting to dialogue as the optimal path for resolving disputes,” and stressed the need to halt “all practices that could drag the region into greater risks.”

They also underscored “the necessity for the international community to exert efforts to prevent the region from sliding into outcomes that threaten the interests of states and their peoples amid ongoing military operations,” adding that preserving stability requires “putting an end to escalation and reopening channels of dialogue.”

In a separate call, Al-Sudani spoke with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain about regional security developments.

The two leaders affirmed “the necessity of an immediate cessation of military operations in order to spare the region further escalation and tension and prevent it from sliding into broader risks,” the statement said.

They also stressed “the importance of strengthening Arab coordination to confront current challenges” and called on major powers and the international community to assume their responsibilities in halting the war and preserving peace and security at both the regional and international levels, according to the prime minister’s office.
