In talks with Qatari Emir, Barzani urges prevention of Arab-Kurdish conflict
ERBIL — Kurdistan Democratic Party leader Masoud Barzani held a phone call Wednesday evening with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as Syrian government forces and allied armed groups continue assaults against Kurdish-held areas in northeastern Syria, including Rojava.
According to a statement from Barzani’s headquarters, the two leaders discussed regional developments with a focus on maintaining security and stability.
“They exchanged views on the political situation and the latest developments in Syria, emphasizing the importance of preserving the foundations of security and stability,” the statement said.
Both sides agreed on the need to halt fighting and clashes and stressed the importance of preventing Arab-Kurdish conflict, saying disputes should be addressed through dialogue, understanding and peaceful means.
Earlier Wednesday, Barzani also met at the Vatican with Pope Leo XIV, where the two discussed broader hopes for peace and stability in the region and globally. A statement said both expressed hope that peace would prevail and that “the suffering and hardship faced by nations would come to an end.”
The diplomatic contacts come as Syrian government forces and allied armed groups press their offensive in Kurdish-majority areas of northeastern Syria. Kurdish leaders have warned the renewed fighting has displaced civilians and raised fears of demographic change and ethnic targeting in those areas.
