Hemorrhagic fever case reported in Maysan district
MAYSAN — A medical source in the al-Kahla district of Maysan governorate reported a case of hemorrhagic fever involving a butcher on Monday.
The source told 964media that specialized health teams have begun preventive measures, saying they placed the patient “in quarantine to monitor his condition” and disinfected his home “to prevent the spread of the disease.”
Hemorrhagic fever cases have been reported across Iraq over the past year, with the Ministry of Health announcing in July 2025 that the country had recorded 231 infections and 30 deaths. The hardest-hit areas included Dhi Qar, Baghdad’s Rusafa, Muthanna, Wasit and Basra, while Maysan had previously reported 11 cases and one death. Health officials have repeatedly warned that the disease is often linked to contact with livestock, slaughtering practices and tick infestations.
In response, Iraq’s Ministry of Agriculture launched a nationwide preventive campaign in September 2025 through the Veterinary Directorate, providing free spraying of cattle and buffalo and dipping of sheep and goats to control the spread of hemorrhagic fever. Officials said the campaign involved veterinarians, support staff and local authorities, urging livestock owners to cooperate with teams and follow safety measures to protect public health and limit transmission.
