Nearly 10,000 babies born at Sulaymaniyah maternity hospital in 2025, officials say

SULAYMANIYAH — The General Directorate of Health in Sulaymaniyah governorate said nearly 10,000 babies were born at the governorate’s main maternity facility in 2025, with boys accounting for a slight majority, according to annual figures released Thursday.

The directorate said 9,848 births were recorded at Feryakawtn Teaching Maternity Hospital during the year, including 5,096 boys and 4,752 girls. Of the total, 5,528 births were delivered naturally and 4,320 by cesarean section.

The directorate said 42,723 patients visited the maternity hospital in 2025, with 13,101 admitted for treatment and receiving medical care. It also reported 179 twin births and nine triplet births recorded at the hospital during the year.

Final results of Iraq’s 2025 general census show Sulaymaniyah governorate has a population of 2,137,095, including 1,076,917 males and 1,060,178 females, according to official data.
