Counter-Terrorism Service arrests five ISIS suspects across three governorates
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Counter-Terrorism Service said Sunday it arrested five suspected Islamic State members in a series of operations carried out in Kirkuk, Anbar and Nineveh governorates.
In a statement, the service said the arrests were made under judicial warrants and based on “precise intelligence information and continuous field monitoring.”
In Kirkuk, the agency said it detained two suspects it described as ISIS “transporters, suppliers, and providers.” In Anbar, it said two separate operations resulted in the arrest of two more suspects. A further operation in Nineveh led to the arrest of a fifth suspect described as “a remnant of ISIS,” according to the statement.
The Islamic State seized large areas of Iraq in 2014, including Mosul, before being pushed back in campaigns led by Iraqi forces with international support. Although it no longer controls territory, its cells continue to operate in parts of Iraq, carrying out attacks in remote and rural areas.
