Halabja cancels New Year celebrations in solidarity with flood victims

HALABJA — Halabja governorate said it has canceled all official New Year festivities as an expression of solidarity with victims of recent flooding in Chamchamal district and other areas.

Governor Nukhsha Nasih issued the decision to halt celebrations and events marking the New Year, according to a statement from the governorate, which said the move was intended to show respect for the flood victims and extend condolences to affected families.

The governorate said the cancellation reflects solidarity with Chamchamal and the spirit of unity and mutual support across the Kurdistan Region during difficult times.

Heavy rainfall on Dec. 9 caused severe flooding in Chamchamal, Kirkuk, Garmiyan and other areas, resulting in five confirmed deaths and damage to hundreds of homes and vehicles.

In a related move, Sulaymaniyah Gov. Haval Abubakir said no official Christmas or New Year celebrations will be held across Sulaymaniyah governorate.
