Erbil airport suspends flights again as dense fog blankets Kurdistan Region

ERBIL — Flights at Erbil International Airport were suspended early Tuesday because of dense fog, marking the second halt since Monday, while Sulaymaniyah International Airport continued operating normally, airport officials said.

Ahmad Wshyar, director of Erbil International Airport, told 964media that “due to fog and weather instability, all flights at the airport have been suspended until further notice,” adding that “as long as the fog persists, flights will not resume.” He said the fog intensified across Erbil and surrounding areas early Monday morning, prompting the decision to suspend air traffic.

Sulaymaniyah International Airport, meanwhile, reported no disruption. A schedule posted on the airport’s website showed four flights planned for Tuesday, with two already departed and two more scheduled for midday and the afternoon.

Iraq’s General Authority for Meteorology and Seismology on Monday warned that dense morning fog in several cities could reduce horizontal visibility to less than 1 kilometer before conditions improve later in the day. The authority said weather is expected to remain relatively stable overall, ranging from clear to partly cloudy, with light winds, slight temperature changes and chances of light to moderate rainfall in northern and western areas over the coming days.
