Meeting in Baghdad
Khazali and Halbousi call for swift formation of new Iraqi government
BAGHDAD — Qais Al-Khazali, secretary-general of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement, met with Mohammed Al-Halbousi, head of the Taqaddum Alliance, to discuss recent political developments and the formation of Iraq’s next government.
The meeting, part of ongoing political activity in Baghdad following the conclusion of parliamentary elections, included a joint call to “expedite steps toward forming a new government.”
Iraq held its sixth parliamentary election since 2003 on Nov. 11, 2025, electing 329 members of the Council of Representatives. The Independent High Electoral Commission reported turnout of 56.11%, higher than in the 2021 vote.
According to a statement from Khazali’s office, both sides emphasized that forming the government quickly is essential to strengthening political stability and meeting public expectations for a capable administration.
They exchanged congratulations on the election results and praised the broad voter participation, describing it as “a sign of public awareness.”
Khazali and Halbousi also agreed that the upcoming government should be formed with individuals “possessing competence and the ability to manage national files.”
Official results show the Reconstruction and Development Coalition led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani won 46 seats, but no party or coalition secured a majority. Forming a government will require alliances and compromises among several blocs.
