Iraqi security force member killed, two wounded in attack near Karbala

BAGHDAD — An Iraqi security force member was killed and two others wounded after a unit from the Karbala Operations Command came under attack while conducting a search mission in the desert area linking Karbala and Najaf early Wednesday, the Security Media Cell said.

The cell said the force was carrying out “a routine inspection operation” when it was “subjected to an airstrike and gunfire,” calling the incident “condemned and deplorable.” It did not attribute responsibility, and a high-level investigation committee has been formed to determine the circumstances.

“We stress that the recurrence of such incidents against our security forces inside our territory while performing their duties constitutes a violation and an unjustified act,” the statement said, adding that “this breach represents an unacceptable transgression that will be dealt with according to applicable military laws and norms.”

The incident comes as security tensions have escalated across Iraq during the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran. In recent days, Iranian Kurdish opposition bases in Koya district have been struck by drone and missile attacks, and multiple drone incidents have been reported near Baghdad International Airport.
