US Embassy marks eighth anniversary of Iraq’s victory over ISIS

BAGHDAD – The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Wednesday commemorated the eighth anniversary of Iraq’s territorial victory over the Islamic State group, honoring those who fought in the campaign and reaffirming Washington’s partnership with Baghdad.

“Eight years after Iraq’s territorial victory over ISIS, we honor the Iraqi Security Forces, members of the International Coalition, and all who sacrificed in the fight against terrorism,” the embassy said in a statement. It added that “the United States remains committed to partnering with Iraq to strengthen its sovereignty and build a more prosperous future.”

Iraq declared victory over ISIS in December 2017 after years of operations by Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition, to recapture territory seized by the extremist group in 2014. Though the group no longer holds territory, its remnants continue to pose security threats in several regions.

Earlier Wednesday, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani marked the anniversary in a post on his official X account, saying, “On the eighth anniversary of Victory Day, we draw inspiration from the heroic acts and profound sacrifices made by Iraqis as they fought one of the noblest and most honorable battles in defense of their homeland against the terrorist ISIS organization.”
