Girl, 9, dies after being swept away by floodwaters in Kirkuk village

KIRKUK – A nine-year-old girl died after being swept away by floodwaters in the village of Farqani in Laylan subdistrict, Kirkuk Governorate, local authorities said.

Preliminary information indicates the victim was a third-grade student. Her body was later recovered after floodwaters submerged parts of the village following days of heavy rain.

Several days of intense rainfall have triggered flash floods in areas across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. On Tuesday, two people were killed and four others injured in flooding in Sulaymaniyah’s Chamchamal district, where local officials reported damage to several public buildings.

A Shorash subdistrict official told 964media, “Unfortunately, because of the flooding, a resident over 70 years old and a child lost their lives.”
