Iraqi Navy rescues fishermen after boat malfunctions near Al-Faw port

BASRA — Iraq’s Naval Command rescued a group of Iraqi fishermen on Sunday after their boat experienced a malfunction near the breakwater of Al-Faw Grand Port in Basra.

According to a statement, the operation was launched following a distress call from a fishing boat near the breakwater.

A team from the Umm Qasr base was dispatched using naval craft. Upon reaching the site, the crew found a technical issue with the vessel and towed it to the speedboat dock at Al-Faw Port.

Naval authorities confirmed the fault was repaired and assistance was provided, adding that the health of the crew was checked before they departed.

The statement said the operation was part of Umm Qasr Naval Base’s duties in “ensuring protection, conducting search and rescue operations, and preserving lives at sea,” in accordance with the international maritime convention.
