Kurdistan Islamic Scholars Union urges voter participation ahead of Iraq parliamentary elections
ERBIL — The Kurdistan Islamic Scholars Union has issued a statement on the eve of Iraq’s parliamentary elections encouraging participation in the vote, describing it as both a “religious and national obligation.”
The union stated that elections are an essential process for renewing governance, safeguarding public interests, and ensuring the country’s proper administration.
Special voting for more than 1.3 million security personnel and 26,000 displaced voters took place Sunday.
The message called for a transparent election process and stated, “We hope this election will be a station of goodness and peace for the Kurdish people and Kurdistan.”
The union noted that a strong Kurdish presence in Iraq’s political landscape would enhance the region’s ability to defend constitutional and national rights. It emphasized the importance of active participation, particularly from voters in the disputed areas.
According to the final report from Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission on the special voting process, overall turnout reached 82.52% among eligible participants, while more than 235,000 voters did not cast ballots.
