Including young individuals
Mobile bread seller in Basra is a daily livelihood with stale bread
BASRA, November 5 — A significant number of people in Basra rely on “stale bread” as a daily source of income, including young individuals like Abbas Hussein. He collects stale bread from Al-Mufaqiyah and sells it with his cart to an intermediary who, in turn, supplies it to fish and livestock traders.
Abbas, a resident of Al-Hayaniyah, earns around 25,000 Iraqi dinars daily by selling stale bread from just one area in Basra, working until noon.
Mobile bread seller Abbas Hussein, speaking to Network 964, says:
“I roam with my trike cart and buy bread from Al-Mufaqiyah’s homes daily. I work only in this area because it’s close to my residence. Some locals have become regular customers and sometimes give me bread for free. I buy a cart of bread for 1,000 dinars and sell it to a trader in Al-Hayaniyah for 3,000 dinars. He, in turn, sells it to livestock and fish traders and other animal owners. I earn between 20,000 to 25,000 dinars daily. I start my work in the morning until 12 noon.”
