Iraq condemns reported RSF massacres in Sudan’s El Fasher
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday condemned what it described as massacres committed by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher, western Sudan, and reaffirmed its opposition to any attempts to undermine the country’s sovereignty.
“The Republic of Iraq strongly condemns the massacres and violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces in the city of El Fasher in western Sudan, which have caused victims and severe humanitarian suffering among innocent civilians,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Sudanese conflict erupted in April 2023 after fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. As of October 2025, the war has become one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
Violence in Darfur, particularly in El Fasher, has intensified following the RSF’s capture of the city, which marked the fall of the last Sudanese army stronghold in the region. Reports and videos circulated online have shown mass killings, summary executions, and attacks on civilians, including ethnically motivated violence targeting non-Arab communities.
The ministry said Iraq “firmly rejects all attempts to undermine security and stability or to harm the sovereignty of the brotherly state of Sudan,” warning against “efforts to impose a de facto situation or entrench any form of geographical or political division in the country.”
It added that Baghdad supports dialogue as the only viable path toward peace. “We affirm the Republic of Iraq’s full support for adopting dialogue as a means to resolve problems and reject violence, and for pursuing a peaceful path within the framework of a national dialogue that contributes to ending the crisis and achieving security and stability for the Sudanese people,” the statement said.
