Rain forecast in northern Iraq as temperatures fall slightly

BAGHDAD — Most areas of Iraq are seeing unstable weather today, alternating between clear and cloudy skies, with chances of rain and thunderstorms in the north, according to a report from the General Directorate of Meteorology.

The report said light to moderate showers are expected in Duhok, Erbil, northern Nineveh, and Sulaymaniyah, with possible heavy rainfall overnight in parts of Duhok. Central and southern regions are expected to remain mostly stable and dry.

Temperatures will drop slightly in northern areas by about two degrees Celsius, bringing mild daytime conditions and cooler nights, while mountain regions will be cold.

“The weather will be partly cloudy to cloudy at times in the central and northern regions, and clear in the south, with chances of light to moderate rain showers in Duhok, Erbil, and northern parts of Nineveh and Sulaymaniyah, accompanied by scattered thunderstorms,” the directorate said. “There is a chance of heavy rain in Duhok at night.”

It added that temperatures will be similar to yesterday in central and southern Iraq, with the north seeing a slight decrease of one to two degrees. “The weather will be cool in the morning and at night, mild during the day, and cold in the mountains,” the report said.

Winds are expected to be northwesterly at 10 to 20 kilometers per hour. Visibility will generally range between 8 and 10 kilometers but may drop to 5 to 7 kilometers due to morning haze and air pollutants, and as low as 2 to 4 kilometers in areas experiencing heavy rainfall.
