Baghdad governor announces progress on Baghdad–Baquba entrance road project

BAGHDAD — Baghdad’s Gov. Atwan Al-Atwani on Saturday announced progress on construction work along the Baghdad–Baquba “touristic” entrance road, saying crews have begun installing pipelines and the electrical network for the 10-kilometer project.

The road includes two main lanes, a central median, street lighting, New Jersey barriers on both sides, and a three-meter-wide irrigation path, according to a statement from the governorate council.

Al-Atwani said the project is advancing rapidly as part of a broader plan to improve road and service infrastructure across the capital. “The technical teams have completed installing pipes from the project’s starting point to nearly two kilometers,” he said. “They also extended the electrical network and set up poles along the route, with coordination underway to move power lines from the old system to the new one.”

He added that backfilling and surface preparation continue on the return lane toward Baghdad, with about 800 meters of soil leveling completed. “The project also includes installing a water network on both sides of the road and relocating aerial cables to ensure smooth traffic flow and project safety,” Al-Atwani said.

The governor noted that the first asphalt layer has been completed at several stations, and work is underway to lay the second layer in the return section toward Al-Shaoura.

Al-Atwani said technical teams are adhering to the project schedule to enhance Baghdad’s road network and improve services for residents.
