Iraq welcomes Gaza agreement, voices support for lasting peace
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday it welcomes regional and international efforts that resulted in an agreement on Gaza, voicing support for initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and ensuring lasting peace.
The ministry reaffirmed Iraq’s backing for “all endeavors aimed at ending the war, alleviating the suffering of civilians, and creating conditions that promote stability, in a way that guarantees the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with international resolutions, and ultimately fulfills their aspirations to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
The first phase of the Gaza agreement took effect Thursday morning, marking a halt in active hostilities and the beginning of a hostage-prisoner exchange, according to reports. Israel and Hamas reached the accord overnight, which includes an Israeli troop withdrawal to prearranged lines and the release of all hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
