Duhok exports 45,000 tons of produce in September, annual total exceeds 209,000 tons

DUHOK — The Duhok Directorate of Agriculture announced that more than 45,000 tons of local agricultural produce were exported from the governorate to cities in central and southern Iraq during September.

Duhok is recognized as one of the Kurdistan Region’s key agricultural areas, producing large quantities of vegetables and fruits each year.

According to Ahmad Jamil, director general of agriculture in Duhok, exports in September included 26,791 tons of potatoes, 10,753 tons of onions, 1,665 tons of tomatoes, 5,746 tons of grapes, 921 tons of cucumbers, 37 tons of watermelons, 1 ton of figs, and 30 tons of beans.

The directorate added that from January 2, 2025, through the end of September, total exports of agricultural products from Duhok governorate reached 209,391 tons to other Iraqi cities.

The governorate’s agriculture is diverse, with farms also producing pomegranates, figs, tomatoes, cucumbers, and sesame. Akre district hosts about 250,000 fig trees across 3,706 acres, while Amedi district harvested over 120 tons of sesame in 2023. Duhok’s Nawkur Plain contributes around 450,000 tons of potatoes annually, about 70% of the Kurdistan Region’s total.

The governorate’s 18th annual grape and honey festival took place in September under the slogan “Duhok, the source of domestic production.”
