New mills in Dubz reduce reliance on Kirkuk and Hawija for grain processing
KIRKUK — Residents of Dubz no longer need to travel to Kirkuk or Hawija to grind wheat and barley, as the district now hosts two local mills, including a recently opened facility in Bay Hassan village.
The mills operate through three stages, starting with cleaning the grains and ending with separating byproducts, which are repurposed as animal feed.
Machines at the facilities produce bulgur, cracked wheat, and barley flour intended for diabetic patients, while other machines are dedicated to generating animal feed from husks and residue.
Abbas Hazem, owner of a mill in Dubz, told 964media: “We have three machines. The first processes corn, wheat, and barley in general. The second is specialized in barley to produce animal feed. The third grinds wheat to produce bulgur and kibbeh wheat, and grinds barley into flour for diabetic patients.”
Another mill owner, Ali Khamis, explained: “The byproducts of grinding are partly discarded during cleaning and partly used as animal feed.”
