Girl dies and three siblings hospitalized after suspected food poisoning in Diyala
DIYALA — Health officials on Monday confirmed the death of an 11-year-old girl and the hospitalization of her three siblings after severe food poisoning from a home-cooked meal.
Faris al-Azzawi, media director for the Diyala Health Department, told 964media that Baqubah General Hospital “received four cases of acute poisoning of children from one family after eating a meal consisting of ramen, eggs, bananas, vanilla and other materials prepared by their mother.”
He said the poisoning “caused the death of an 11-year-old girl, who passed away this morning inside the hospital, while her siblings are still receiving treatment and are now under close medical observation.”
In early September, 29 people in Baqubah were treated for food poisoning after eating falafel meals at a newly opened restaurant, the Diyala Health Department said. Spokesperson Faris al-Azzawi told 964media all patients were discharged in stable condition, while health teams collected food samples and shut the restaurant pending tests and legal action. The case followed other food poisoning outbreaks in Baghdad, Duhok, and Anbar in recent months, prompting calls for tighter enforcement.
