Idyllic scenes in southern Iraq
Leisure-seekers flock to the banks of Basra’s Dair River as temperatures fall
BASRA, November 1 — With the drop in temperatures, residents of Al-Madina district are rushing to reserve spots at restaurants, orchards, and cafes overlooking the Dair River, where nature’s beauty abounds.
The river is one of several tributaries feeding the Euphrates River. It runs some seven kilometers, nourishing hundreds of orchards and farms.
Along the river, palm groves, citrus orchards, and jujube, pomegranate, and apricot trees abound, as well as vegetable farms with okra and corn. Hundreds of beehives are also scattered across the area.
Majid Al-Hasani, owner of an orchard, shared, “My orchard has transformed into a leisure destination because it overlooks the Dair River. Tourists and locals visit to enjoy the river’s view and the shade of the palm, jujube, and pomegranate trees, under which they sit and savor their fruits.”
Abu Ali, a frequent visitor to the banks of the Dair River, said, “I often visit the Dair River or one of the orchards overlooking it. The air here is refreshing, and the river, along with the palm trees and boats during sunset, create a breathtaking scene.”
Abu Ali said he always invites visitors from other governorates to have lunch or breakfast in one of the orchards. “One restaurant overlooking the Dair River stands out with its charming setting, as it is covered with trees and flowers, resembling an artistic painting.”
“When strolling along the riverbank, you can spot fishermen using nets or fishing lines to catch fish,” he added.
Rafid Al-Shawi, the district administrator of Al-Madina, commented, “The Dair River is one of the captivating tributaries of the Euphrates River due to its scenic views. Several cafes and numerous orchards overlook it, making it an attraction for visitors from inside and outside the district, thereby providing an economic source for many residents of the city.”
