Posthumous work of Kut fire victim Raghad Saadoun released

WASIT — Abjad Publishing and Translation House has issued the Arabic edition of “Textual and Translational Thresholds,” the work of late researcher Raghad Saadoun, who died in the Kut hypermarket fire before she could defend her thesis.

Saadoun had been scheduled to defend her master’s thesis at the University of Basra’s College of Arts, Department of Translation, but died days before the session. The defense went ahead in her absence, and the examining committee recommended that her research be published. Her advisor, Professor Kazem Khalaf Al-Ali, supervised the editing and publication of the manuscript and later translated it into Arabic.

The book, intended primarily for translators, focuses on their role as cultural intermediaries and examines the beginning stages of translation from the reader’s point of view.

“Textual and Translational Thresholds” spans 180 pages across five chapters. It was printed in Babil with a run of 1,000 copies and is available through Abjad Publishing’s office in Hillah.

The July fire at a Kut shopping center killed 61 people and fueled anger that led to protests and the resignation of Wasit Governor Mohammed Jameel Al-Mayahy.
